After the evacuation of Dunkirk and the French surrender, Hitler believed the war would soon be over. The German’s didn’t know which action
to take next and Hitler would be very wrong about Britain being defeated. Churchill
refused to even consider an armistice with the Nazis. His skillful use of persuasion made the public opinion turn against
a peaceful resolution and prepared Britain for a long war to come. Churchill presented a speech in the House of Commons on June
18 1940 that boosted some spirits for the coming battle. “What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization.
Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might
of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose
the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands.
But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink
into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let
us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand
years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."”
When the British rejected the German’s terms, Hitler decided he wanted
to end the war in the west as fast as he could. He was going to try and frighten the British into peace. Operation Sea Lion was planned for September. It was greatly flawed plan. There
was a lack of resources, and disagreements between the German Navy and Army. One thing was agreed upon; Luftwaffe had to win
the air superiority in order for the invasion to succeed. Eagle Attack was arranged to take out the British air force.
